Short answer. Halal food, prayer rooms and mosques across Japan, in the 19 prefectures where Malaysian visitors spend over 95% of their nights (Japan Tourism Agency, Overnight Travel Statistics Survey 2025): 150 places to eat, 78 prayer rooms and mosques, 3 halal groceries in 10 chapters, from Tokyo to Hokkaido, Kyushu and Okinawa. Every place links to an official source, with the date I checked it. A PDF (English and BM, about 80 pages) and a Google map you can open on your phone. US$6.99 (≈ RM28.55), free updates.
Edition 2 Oct 2026 (all checked 28 Sept – 2 Oct 2026). Status can change; confirm at the restaurant before ordering.
What to know first
- Tokyo Disney Resort: no halal food inside the parks or at the Disney hotels (official FAQ, checked 28 Sept 2026). Your own food can only be eaten in the Picnic Area outside the gates.
- "Muslim friendly" is never written as "halal". Only 8 of the 150 places to eat name a certifying body. Outside Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto most places are Muslim-friendly menus (level D) — each chapter starts with a short "Before you go" that says what could and could not be confirmed there.
- I don't list a place just because a tourism list does. If the restaurant's own site says nothing, it goes on the "Not listed" pages with the reason (325 places).
Four levels, in the source's own words
| Level | Meaning | Places to eat |
|---|---|---|
| A | The official source names the certifying body (e.g. NAHA, MPJA, JHCPO, Japan Halal Foundation) | 8 |
| B | The shop says it is certified, but the body is not named | 39 |
| C | Halal ingredients / no pork and no alcohol, no certification claim | 25 |
| D | Muslim-friendly / halal meat only / a no-pork, no-alcohol menu | 78 |
If a place sits between two levels, I put it in the lower one.
The 10 chapters
| Chapter | Places |
|---|---|
| Tokyo (+ Chiba) | 54 |
| Around Tokyo (Kanagawa, Tochigi) | 14 |
| Mount Fuji (Yamanashi, Shizuoka) | 24 |
| Central Japan (Aichi, Gifu, Nagano, Ishikawa) | 34 |
| Osaka (+ Kobe, Himeji, Nara) | 34 |
| Kyoto | 25 |
| Kyushu (Fukuoka, Kumamoto) | 14 |
| Okinawa | 7 |
| Tohoku (Sendai, Miyagi) | 3 |
| Hokkaido | 22 |
Some prefectures have only 1–3 places (Nara, Ishikawa, Nagano, Gifu, Kumamoto, Miyagi, and Hyogo outside Kobe) — check your destination in the table before you buy. Some chapters are thin because few places say anything about halal on their own sites. I say so at the start of each chapter instead of filling it with places I could not check.
Two sample entries
Nikunotakumi Shoutaian Kanda (Tokyo, between Tokyo Station and Akihabara) · Level A
Halal wagyu yakiniku on the halal list of NAHA (Nippon Asia Halal Association). Lunch Mon–Fri 11:30–14:00; dinner daily 17:00–23:00. Tables, 40 seats. Source ↗ · checked 28 Sept 2026
Fukuoka Airport International Terminal: prayer room · Prayer room
4F, before security, with washing facilities in front of the room. A second room is on 3F after security. Source ↗ · checked 2 Oct 2026
Every entry in the PDF has Map ↗ and Source ↗ links (and, where available, an Archive ↗ copy of the official page saved by the Internet Archive — the save date is in the link), alcohol status, opening hours, a family note, and the source's own words.
What you get
- English PDF and BM PDF (about 80 pages each, with area photos), in 10 chapters: a photo opener, an area list and a QR code to the map for each chapter, then numbered entries.
- Google map: 10 layers (one per chapter); pin numbers match the PDF, and icons show halal food, prayer rooms, mosques and halal groceries.
- Airport prayer rooms at 13 airports, before or after security where the airport says so — Narita, Haneda, KIX, Centrair, Fukuoka, New Chitose, Naha, Kobe, Sendai and more.
- 325 places I left out, and why: closed, official page won't open, no halal statement on the shop's own site, tourism list only, or a hijacked link.
- Free updates: I re-check places and add new ones from time to time; each new version is free on Gumroad.
I don't use data from other halal directories or apps. Put together with AI help; I read every entry from its official source on the date shown.
