What happened. JR Central and JR West announced on 16 October 2026 that the limited express charge for reserved seats on Nozomi (Tokaido–Sanyo Shinkansen) and Mizuho (Sanyo–Kyushu) trains will rise for tickets bought from 1 July 2027. Examples of the full adult one-way price, regular season, ordinary reserved seat: Tokyo–Shin-Osaka ¥14,720 → ¥15,420 (+¥700), Tokyo–Nagoya ¥11,300 → ¥11,880 (+¥580), Tokyo–Hiroshima ¥19,760 → ¥20,620 (+¥860), Shin-Osaka–Hakata ¥16,020 → ¥16,300 (+¥280). It is the Tokaido Shinkansen's first increase since the Nozomi entered service, apart from consumption tax rises (The Star, 17 Oct). The non-reserved charge on Nozomi and Mizuho does not change. Green Car charges rise for travel from 15 December 2027, and Supreme Class prices are revised with them.

What it means for you. Trips in December 2026 and early 2027 are not affected — the increase follows the date you buy the ticket, not the travel date. For trips after July 2027, +¥700 on Tokyo–Shin-Osaka is about RM18 per person one way (¥100 = RM2.583, ECB 16 Oct 2026); a couple's round trip adds ¥2,800, about RM72. To save, non-reserved seats do not go up — though in certain peak periods Nozomi runs with all seats reserved (JR Central). For Tokyo–Osaka tickets and current prices: Tokyo–Osaka Shinkansen tickets on Klook (price depends on date). Compare with the pass: JR Pass price rise, 1 Oct 2026.
