Can you book a private room on the Tokyo–Osaka Shinkansen? From 1 October 2026, yes: ¥42,100 solo or ¥60,500 for two (Supreme Class)

Short answer. Yes, from 1 October 2026, but only for one or two people. JR Central introduces Supreme Class, a tier above the Green Car, on Nozomi trains on the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen: private rooms with a lockable door (opened with a registered IC card), reclining seats with leg rests and seat heating, dimmable lighting, dedicated luggage space and Wi-Fi. Two types: a solo room in Car 10 and a two-person room with a sofa in Car 7. Fares as of 17 June 2026: Tokyo–Shin-Osaka ¥42,100 per person (solo) or ¥60,500 for the two-person room, plus an ordinary reserved-seat ticket for the second passenger (Time Out Tokyo, 19 June 2026, citing JR Central). It starts on about 12 trains a day, planned to reach about 30 by the end of the fiscal year.

What it means for you.

• Not for a family of four. The biggest room takes two. An ordinary reserved seat Tokyo–Shin-Osaka is ≈ ¥14,500; the solo room is about three times that. For four people, ordinary seats together remain the sensible choice.
• When it makes sense: a couple without children who want 2.5 hours of sleep or work undisturbed, or parents with a baby worried about crying (a locked room, sound stays in). ¥60,500 + ¥14,500 ≈ ¥75,000 (≈ RM1,940) for two, one way.
