Japan's "Silver Week" 19–23 September 2026: five consecutive holidays, trains and hotels full

What happened. Two Japanese public holidays fall close together this year: Respect for the Aged Day on Monday 21 September and Autumnal Equinox Day on Wednesday 23 September. Under Japan's holiday law, the Tuesday sandwiched between them (22 September) also becomes a holiday. Add the preceding weekend and Japanese residents get five consecutive days off, Saturday 19 to Wednesday 23 September 2026 (source: Cabinet Office of Japan, 2026 public holidays). This alignment is rare, so a large share of the country will be travelling.

What it means for you.

• Shinkansen and limited express trains will be packed, especially Saturday 19 (leaving Tokyo/Osaka) and Wednesday 23 (returning). Reserved seats are far safer than non-reserved; book about a month ahead on the official JR sites.
• Hotels in Kyoto, Osaka, Fukuoka and onsen towns will be expensive and sell out for the nights of 19–22 September. If your dates are still flexible, avoid this window or book now with free cancellation.
• Sights (Fushimi Inari, Arashiyama, Universal Studios, Disney) will feel like a major long weekend. Go early in the morning or pick less famous spots.
• From Thursday 24 September things return to normal, and that is the start of Japan's most comfortable season (October–November).
