First information (16 Oct).
What happened. JMA issued its first information on Typhoon No. 30 (Champi) at 09:45 JST on 16 October 2026. At 09:00 JST its centre was in the waters near the Chuuk Islands (11.1°N, 154.1°E — roughly 3,000 km south-east of Tokyo, our calculation from JMA's coordinates), 994 hPa, maximum sustained winds 23 m/s (gusts 35 m/s), moving west at 20 km/h. JMA's forecast: 17 Oct 980 hPa near the Mariana Islands; 18 Oct 965 hPa (40 m/s); 19 Oct 950 hPa (45 m/s) still in the Marianas; 20 Oct 940 hPa east of the Philippines; 21 Oct 09:00 935 hPa, 50 m/s east of the Philippines (19.8°N, 132.2°E), with a 280 km probability circle.
What it means for you. Through 21 October this typhoon is not approaching Japan — flights to Tokyo, Osaka, Fukuoka and Okinawa this weekend and early next week are not affected by it. What to watch is after 21 Oct: on that date the centre is expected roughly 850 km south-south-east of Naha (our calculation), still moving north-west and very strong. Where it goes next is not yet in any official forecast — JMA only issues a five-day track. Typhoon 29 (Koguma) earlier this month passed east of Japan without hitting Tokyo or Osaka (JMA, 13 Oct).
