Japan Tax Refund 2026: Cash or Card? Airport by Airport (Narita, Haneda, KIX, New Chitose, Fukuoka)

Checked 4 Nov 2026 on the official pages of Narita, Haneda and New Chitose airports, Glory (Self Tax Refund), Cash Japan, Osaka Customs (KIX guide), the Japan Tourism Agency FAQ and PPIH (Don Quijote). KIX's official site returned 403 on 4 Nov. Fukuoka Airport's official site carried no tax refund notice on 4 Nov. Japan Customs' kiosk map would not load on 4 Nov; Fukuoka's kiosk floor uses its 21 Oct 2026 list (checked 1 Nov 2026). Anything we couldn't confirm is marked "not verified". General information, not tax advice.
Short answer. Airport cash isn't your call. It only works if your shop's refund operator is signed up with a machine at the airport you leave from. If not, the refund goes to your card, an app or your bank, whichever you registered at the shop. Per the official pages checked on 4 Nov 2026: Haneda only has Self Tax Refund machines, past security. KIX, New Chitose and Fukuoka only list Cash Japan. Narita has both: Self Tax Refund before security, Cash Japan after. Both pay out in yen cash only. Self Tax Refund takes a service fee off the refund (amount not stated). Don Quijote charges no fee, except when you take cash at the airport. Cash or card, the customs kiosk still comes first, before bag drop.

1. Airport by airport: where the cash is, or card
Every cash refund happens after the customs kiosk (green screen). The customs kiosks at all these terminals are in the departure lobby, before bag drop. Airlines: Narita from Narita's airline search (22 Oct 2026); Haneda from Trip.com search results (21 Oct 2026). Check your e-ticket.

Early flights. Narita's customs kiosks open at 05:30 and its Self Tax Refund machines at 06:00. At New Chitose, the Cash Japan machines open at 06:00 and the counter at 07:00. On an earlier flight, cash may simply not be on offer; a refund to card or app doesn't depend on counter hours.
2. Your shop's operator → which airports pay cash
Glory and Cash Japan each publish the refund operators they take. For any other operator, that machine won't pay out.

How to use it: at the till, ask "Which refund operator do you use?" Then match it to your airport. Say the shop uses Global Blue and you're flying AirAsia X out of Haneda T3. Going by these two pages, no cash machine at Haneda takes that operator, so pick card or app when you pay.
3. Cash or card: how to decide

Not verified on any official page checked: how long a refund to card, app or bank takes, and how much Self Tax Refund or Cash Japan charges. Ask at the shop counter: refund by what, when it arrives, and whether there's a fee.
4. A family of four: what changes
- One transaction per passport. The Self Tax Refund machine handles only purchases registered under one passport per transaction (Glory, 4 Nov 2026). Receipts split across 4 passports mean 4 goes at the machine. Everything under one passport means one.
- Bring the passport you showed at the shop. Cash Japan says you need the same passport you used when buying (Cash Japan, 4 Nov 2026).
- Refunds go by receipt, not by item. Self Tax Refund doesn't do partial refunds on a receipt (Glory). If one item on that receipt is missing or eaten, the whole receipt fails (Japan Tourism Agency FAQ, 4 Nov 2026). Snacks the kids will eat in Japan go on a separate receipt, without tax-free.
- Budget for the tax up front. Example: spend ¥80,000 before tax, pay ¥88,000 at the till, and the tax refund is ¥8,000 (about RM208 at ¥100 = RM2.596, the ECB reference rate of 26 Oct 2026). Take it as cash at Self Tax Refund and you get less than ¥8,000 in hand, because the service fee comes off first.
5. Not verified (4 Nov 2026)
- KIX: the official KIX site returned 403 on 4 Nov. Whether the cash machines are before or after security is not verified on an official page.
- Fukuoka: no tax refund notice on Fukuoka Airport's official site on 4 Nov. Kiosk floor from Japan Customs' list of 21 Oct 2026; Cash Japan counter from Cash Japan's page.
- New Chitose and Fukuoka: Cash Japan before or after security is not stated.
- Self Tax Refund and Cash Japan fees: amounts not stated.
- How long card, app or bank refunds take: not stated on the official pages checked.
- Japan Customs' kiosk list: the map page would not load on 4 Nov; the 21 Oct 2026 version (checked 1 Nov 2026) is used.
