Checked 3 Nov 2026 on the official pages of Narita, Haneda, New Chitose and Fukuoka airports, and Cash Japan. KIX prayer rooms were checked on KIX's official page on 31 Oct 2026 (the page would not open on 3 Nov). Customs kiosk floors come from Japan Customs' list dated 21 Oct 2026 (checked 1 Nov 2026). Where an official page is silent, the table says "not stated". General information, not tax advice.

Short answer. For tax-free goods bought since 1 November 2026, departure day runs in this order: (1) the customs tax-free kiosk in the departure lobby, before you drop your bags → (2) pray → (3) bag drop and security → (4) cash refund, only if your shop's refund operator takes part. Step 1 has to come before bag drop because a checked bag can't be pulled back (Japan Tourism Agency FAQ). Step 2 matters most at Haneda T3 (AirAsia X): the prayer rooms are before security only, so pray first, then go through. Narita T1/T2, KIX T1 and Fukuoka have rooms on both sides. No official page gives a number of minutes; the Japan Tourism Agency just says "arrive early". Checked 3 Nov 2026.

Cash Japan does not say whether its counters are before or after security.

Haneda T1 (domestic) has no tax refund service and no prayer room (Haneda, 3 Nov 2026). Flying Sapporo → Tokyo → KL? The whole refund procedure happens at the international airport where you leave Japan (National Tax Agency & Customs).

2. How early should you get there?

None of the official pages checked gives a number (Japan Tourism Agency, Narita, Haneda, 3 Nov 2026). What they do say:

3. Cash or card: the difference

Cash at the airportTo card / app / bank
Who decidesThe shop or its refund operatorThe shop or its refund operator
WhenAfter the customs kiosk (green screen). At Haneda, the Self Tax Refund machines are past securityAfter customs confirms the goods are leaving. Timing not stated in the official leaflets

FeeSelf Tax Refund: a service fee comes off the refund. Don Quijote: no fee, except for cash at the airportDon Quijote: no fee
LimitsSelf Tax Refund: yen cash only, ¥100 minimum, ¥1,000,000 maximum, one passport per transaction—

Sources: National Tax Agency (refund routes: bank transfer, credit card, app, cash at the departure port); Narita and Haneda official pages (3 Nov 2026); Glory, Self Tax Refund (1 Nov 2026); PPIH (Don Quijote) release of 5 Oct 2026, checked 1 Nov 2026.

At the till, ask three things: how the refund is paid, when it arrives, and whether there's a fee. If you want cash, also ask which machine at your airport takes that shop's operator.

4. Six things that trip families up

  1. One passport, one transaction at the cash machine. A family of four means four separate goes at Self Tax Refund (Glory, 1 Nov 2026).
  2. Eat one item and the whole receipt fails. Customs checks by receipt. Snacks the kids will eat in Japan go on a separate receipt, without tax-free (Japan Tourism Agency FAQ).
  3. Goods must be on hand. Don't seal tax-free items into a bag you'll check before the screen turns green. Keep them in your carry-on.
  4. Haneda T3 has no prayer room past security. If prayer time is close to boarding, pray on 3F first, then go through (Haneda, 3 Nov 2026).
  5. Narita says nothing about wudu facilities in its prayer rooms (Narita, 3 Nov 2026). Haneda says it has washing facilities; KIX T1, New Chitose and Fukuoka list wudu areas.
  6. Goods confirmed by customs but not taken out are taxed again with a penalty. Buy only what you can carry out yourself.

5. Eating before you fly (status in the source's own words)

The label is read for you; you decide. Halal status can change: confirm at the restaurant before eating.

6. Could not confirm (3 Nov 2026)
