Short answer. Two onsen nights for a family of four in the December school holidays: Yufuin RM1,390–5,782 (most ryokan RM2,600–4,200 with dinner), Beppu RM653–6,225 (city hotels RM650–2,100 without meals). From Fukuoka it is two hours: the Yufuin no Mori train at ¥5,690 per person (2h15) or the Sonic express to Beppu at ¥5,680 (2h05). For a Muslim family, one thing decides it: book a room with its own private onsen bath (not the public pool), and ask about the dinner menu before you pay.

236 properties. Beppu is a city of 110,000 with eight onsen districts; the "Hells of Beppu" (coloured hot pools to look at, not bathe in) are the draw for children.
3. Getting there from Fukuoka

A family of four return by train ≈ ¥45,000 (≈ RM1,170). 4. For Muslim families: three things before booking
- Public onsen = no clothing, men and women separated. If that is not for you, look for rooms marked "open-air bath in room" or "private onsen", or book a "kashikiri" (a private onsen bathroom rented by the slot, usually 45–60 minutes, offered by many ryokan). In the lists above, Oyado Kaikatei (Yufuin) and Rakuten STAY VILLA (Yufuin) have their own onsen.
- Kaiseki dinner usually includes pork, meat, alcohol in the cooking (mirin, sake) and fish dashi. Ryokan with dinner included can rarely change the whole menu; email the ryokan before paying and ask for "no pork, no alcohol in cooking", or pick a hotel without meals and bring or buy your own. - Prayer: tatami rooms are spacious; bring a prayer mat and compass. I could not confirm any surau in Yufuin or Beppu.
5. Questions people ask
Is December cold? Yes, 3–10 °C in Yufuin (it is in the hills), which is exactly when an onsen feels best. Bring a thick jacket; see [Japan weather by month](/japan-weather-by-month/).
Yufuin or Beppu for just one night? Yufuin for the atmosphere; Beppu to save money and for the Hells with children.
Does the JR Pass cover it? Both trains are covered by the national JR Pass, but for a Kyushu-only trip the JR Kyushu Pass (northern area) is cheaper than the national pass. The national pass sums are in [JR Pass price increase, 1 Oct](/jr-pass-price-increase-october-2026/).
