Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games 19 Sept–4 Oct 2026: Nagoya hotels full, Tokyo and Osaka still fine

What happened. The 20th Asian Games open on Saturday 19 September 2026 at Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium in Nagoya and run until 4 October. According to Malay Mail (AFP, 15 September), about 17,000 athletes and officials from 45 countries and territories compete in 43 sports. Main events are in Nagoya and Aichi prefecture; swimming is held in Tokyo. Malaysia's contingent is targeting six gold medals (Malay Mail, 15 September).

What it means for you.

• Nagoya is full from 19 Sept to 4 Oct. Hotels around Nagoya Station and Sakae will be expensive and sell out, and the first week overlaps with Silver Week (19–23 September). If Nagoya is only a stopover (Legoland, Ghibli Park), consider sleeping in Tokyo or Osaka and coming by Shinkansen (Tokyo–Nagoya 1 h 40 min, Osaka–Nagoya 50 min).
• Tokyo and Osaka are not directly affected, apart from swimming in Tokyo. Hotel prices there move with Silver Week, not with the Games.
• Want to watch Malaysian athletes? Tickets are sold on the official Aichi-Nagoya 2026 site; some events are free to watch (marathon, race walk). Check Malaysia's event schedule on the official site before booking a hotel.
• After 4 October Nagoya returns to normal, right as the most comfortable autumn season begins.
