Mount Aso crater still closed (alert level 2 since 1 September 2026): Kusasenri, Daikanbo and the museum are open

What happened. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) lowered the Mount Aso alert level from 3 to 2 on 1 September 2026 at 16:00, after raising it to 3 on 14 August. The 1 km entry ban around the Nakadake crater stays: the crater, the Aso Park Road (toll road to the rim) and the crater shuttle bus are still closed. Crater viewing has been restricted since a sightseeing helicopter crashed into the first crater on 20 January 2026. The Tozan bus from Aso Station to Aso Sanjo Terminal resumed on 2 September (Watabi, citing the Aso Volcano Disaster Prevention Council and JMA, verified 14 September 2026).

What it means for you.

• If Aso is in your October–December plan, don't cancel it: the Kusasenri grassland and lake (free, parking ≈ ¥500), the Daikanbo caldera viewpoint, the Komezuka cone (viewing only) and the Aso Volcano Museum (adults ¥1,300) are all open. That is the view people come for; the crater is only one part of it.
• Don't promise the kids "we'll see the crater" until the level drops to 1 and the Aso Park Road reopens. Check the status that morning on the Aso Volcano Disaster Prevention Council site.
