Kyushu Car Rental #2: Fukuoka → Kumamoto → Aso in 4 Days, Real Costs (Aso Crater Closed in 2026, Here's What's Still Open)

Short answer. From Fukuoka, Kumamoto Castle is only 91 km / 56 minutes on the expressway (NEXCO), and Mount Aso is a little over an hour further on ordinary roads. For 4 days: small car ≈ ¥36,400, 4-day Kyushu Expressway Pass ¥10,600, fuel ≈ ¥4,000, total ≈ ¥51,000 for one car (≈ RM1,340), or ≈ RM670 per person for two. One thing to know before you plan: the Nakadake crater at Aso is still closed (alert level 2 since 1 September 2026), but the Kusasenri grassland, the Daikanbo rim viewpoint and the Aso Volcano Museum are open.

Status can change within a day. Before driving up, check the Aso Volcano Disaster Prevention Council site (link in Sources). With a car, Kusasenri and Daikanbo are still worth it: that caldera view is what people come for.
2. The 4-day plan (sleep Fukuoka → Kumamoto → Aso → Fukuoka)

Expressway tolls covered by KEP in this plan: ¥2,630 × 2 = ¥5,260 (NEXCO DoRaPuRa). A 4-day KEP costs ¥10,600, more than those tolls, so if you only do Kumamoto–Aso, paying normal tolls (¥5,260) is cheaper than KEP. KEP pays off if you add Nagasaki or Beppu within the same 4 days (see [article #1](/kyushu-car-rental-fukuoka-real-costs/)).

Entry tickets (Castle ¥800 + Museum ¥1,300 = ¥2,100 per person) and CDW (excess waiver, added at booking) are not included. For two, the car works out to ≈ RM635–705 per person; for four, ≈ RM320–355 per person, which is where a car wins big over buses and tours.
4. Four things Malaysians should know
- Route 57 and the Kyushu Expressway are fully restored after the 2016 earthquake; the drive to Aso from Kumamoto is smooth. What is not yet restored is Kumamoto Castle itself: repair work is expected to continue until around 2042, and a July 2026 earthquake caused minor damage (reopened 13 August 2026, Japan Guide).
- Volcanic gas: even when the crater reopens, people with asthma or heart conditions are advised not to approach it. Kusasenri and Daikanbo are well away from the gas zone.
- Bring halal food from Kumamoto or Fukuoka. Around Aso, halal options are close to none; convenience stores exist in Aso town ([label sheet](/halal-labels-japan-convenience-store/)).
- The JPJ international driving permit (RM150) is required, as in [article #1](/kyushu-car-rental-fukuoka-real-costs/). All rental cars in Japan have English GPS; enter the destination's phone number (e.g. Kumamoto Castle 096-223-5011) to search.
