Tokyo's accommodation tax becomes 3% from 1 April 2027 (currently ¥100–200 per person per night)

What happened. The Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly passed an amendment to the accommodation tax in March 2026 and the Minister of Internal Affairs gave consent on 30 June 2026. For stays from 1 April 2027, the tax changes from a flat amount (¥100 per person per night for rooms at ¥10,000–14,999, ¥200 at ¥15,000 and above) to 3% of the room rate. Rooms under ¥13,000 per person per night are exempt, and for the first time hostels and minshuku (Airbnb-style stays) are included. Source: Tokyo Metropolitan Government Bureau of Taxation.

What it means for you.

• Trips before 31 March 2027: nothing changes. The tax stays at ¥100–200 per person per night, usually paid at the hotel counter.
• Trips from April 2027: for a RM600-a-night family room (≈ ¥22,700), 3% is ≈ RM18 a night. Budget rooms under ¥13,000 per person (≈ RM343) pay nothing, and most business hotels and apartment hotels fall in that band.
• Read booking-site prices carefully. Trip.com and others show "taxes & fees" separately; after April 2027 that line rises slightly for pricier hotels.
• Kyoto already raised its tax on 1 March 2026 (¥200–10,000 depending on the room rate, [our explainer](/news-kyoto-accommodation-tax-2026/)). Tokyo's is lighter.
