What happened. Yes, but not heavy rain every day. Weathernews reported on 29 September 2026 (05:55 JST) that central Tokyo recorded rain again on Tuesday 29 September, making 34 days in a row since 27 August. That beats the previous record of 33 days (27 June–29 July 2019) and is the longest run since records began in 1876. The causes are the autumn rain front that stayed over Honshu and Typhoons No. 24, 25 and 26 coming one after another. Sunshine in central Tokyo up to 28 September was 45.8 hours, about 40% of normal (same report).
In numbers (our check of JMA's daily data for Tokyo). From 27 August to 28 September, every day has some rain, but 10 of those 33 days show "0.0" mm, meaning less than 0.5 mm. From 1 to 28 September Tokyo received 629.0 mm, about 2.8 times the September normal of 224.9 mm (JMA 1991–2020 normal). The September normal for sunshine is 126.7 hours for the whole month.
What it means for you.
- In Tokyo on 30 September–1 October: expect rain. In JMA's weekly forecast (issued 28 September, 17:00 JST), 30 September is "cloudy with occasional rain" at 80% and 1 October the same at 70%. Pack compact umbrellas and a raincoat for small children (a rain cover if you use a stroller), and keep one indoor plan per day.
- From 2 October: JMA shows "cloudy with sunny spells" and a 30% chance of rain for 2–4 October. Weathernews expects the rain front to clear from 1 October. The two forecasts differ on 1 October, so check again the day before; JMA updates its weekly forecast every day at 11:00 and 17:00 JST.
- Typhoon No. 26 Surigae passes south of Honshu around 1 October, with little direct impact on Honshu expected but rough weather around the Izu Islands (update).
