Halal Food at Lake Kawaguchiko & Mt Fuji: the One Certified Restaurant, an Open Mosque and Yamanashi's "Muslim Friendly" Dishes
Checked 2026-10-05
Every place below is from its own official site or Yamanashi Prefecture's certification sheets, checked 2 October 2026. Status is written as the source says it: "Muslim Friendly" is never written as "halal". I read the label; you decide.
Short answer. Around Lake Kawaguchi there is only one halal-certified restaurant: IDATEN Bettei, 4 minutes' walk from Kawaguchiko Station, certified by JHCPO since August 2025, with no pork, alcohol or mirin, and a prayer room — book and pay a day ahead. Most other restaurants only have specific dishes marked "Muslim Friendly" by Yamanashi Prefecture: those dishes have no pork or alcohol, but this is not halal certification, and many of the kitchens are shared. To pray, Fuji Kawaguchiko Masjid is an "open mosque" for any Muslim. The official pages of Kawaguchiko Station, Chureito Pagoda and Oshino Hakkai mention no prayer room.
0. Plan a day at Kawaguchiko in 3 lines
| When | What | Why |
|---|---|---|
| The day before | Book lunch or dinner at IDATEN Bettei (courses from ¥9,000 before tax; à la carte about ¥2,000 per person) | The only halal-certified restaurant here; you book and pay ahead |
| Prayer times | Fuji Kawaguchiko Masjid, or the prayer room at IDATEN Bettei | The two year-round places to pray around the lake |
| Snacks on the way | Only the dishes marked "Muslim Friendly" (e.g. vegetable hoto, vegetable tempura) | Other dishes in the same shop were not checked |
Going on a day tour from Tokyo? Many tours stop for lunch at ordinary restaurants: bring food, or pick a tour that lists a Muslim menu. Day tours to Kawaguchiko and the 5th Station are on Klook: Mt Fuji day tour from Tokyo (about RM180–215 per person, checked 9 Sept 2026; check the meal in the tour details).

1. Two kinds of mark in Yamanashi: read this first
| Mark | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Halal certified (body named) | The restaurant is certified by a halal certifying body | IDATEN Bettei (JHCPO) |
| "Halal-compatible" (the shop's word) | The shop says it has halal meat; no body named | Mt.MEAT (halal wagyu among some cuts) |
| Yamanashi Prefecture "Muslim Friendly" | The prefecture checks the listed dishes only: no pork, pork derivatives or alcohol (down to second-level ingredients). Not halal certification. "Contaminated" = shared kitchen | Hoto Kenkyujo, Fuji Tempura IDATEN, Café Sazanami, Torikko, Fuji Subaru Land |
Order only the listed dishes, and ask whether the meat is halal — the prefecture's mark doesn't say how it was slaughtered.
2. By area
Kawaguchiko & Fujiyoshida (Fuji Five Lakes)
| Place | What | Status (as the source says) | Hours | Source |

| Mt.MEAT (3F, by Kawaguchiko Station, opened 6 Aug 2026) | Wagyu yakiniku, produced by IDATEN Bettei | The shop says "halal-compatible": halal wagyu among some cuts and halal chicken thigh (body not named) — ask which cuts are halal | 11:00–22:00, closed Mon | official site |
| Hoto Kenkyujo (Kawaguchi) | Hoto (thick noodles in miso stew, Yamanashi's dish) | Prefecture "Muslim Friendly": vegetable hoto made with halal miso; shared kitchen | 11:00–18:00 | prefecture sheet |

Gotemba (the outlets)
| Place | What | Status (as the source says) | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gotemba INDIA (2 min from JR Gotemba Station) | Indian restaurant | The shop says it uses only halal-certified ingredients (body not named); alcohol served | official site |
| Kintokitei (by the Gotemba IC) | Kamameshi, Japanese set meals | The shop says it is "Muslim-friendly"; some set meals can be made halal if you ask when booking | official site |
3. Prayer
- Fuji Kawaguchiko Masjid (Funatsu, Fujikawaguchiko): run by JHCPO since November 2020, an "open mosque" for Muslims of any country or school, travellers included. The official page gives no prayer times, women's area or opening hours (official page).
- IDATEN Bettei: a prayer room for diners.
- Gotemba Premium Outlets: a room for prayer beside the Welcome Center, Hill Side area (official page); the page doesn't mention wudu.
- Fujiten Snow Resort (Narusawa): a permanent prayer space, ski season only (official page).
- Not on their official pages: Kawaguchiko Station, Chureito Pagoda, Oshino Hakkai, Fuji-Q Highland and the Mt Fuji World Heritage Centre mention no prayer room. In Yamanakako, Oshino and Atami I couldn't confirm a restaurant or prayer room on an official site.
4. Traps
- Fuji-Q Highland: the prefecture's list marks a keema curry at the Food Stadium as "Muslim Friendly", but its certificate sheet shows a different dish and Fuji-Q's own site says nothing. Ask there; I don't list it.
- Ordinary hoto uses ordinary miso, and some miso contains "shusei" (alcohol as a preservative — see how to read the label). Pick hoto marked "Muslim Friendly" (Hoto Kenkyujo uses halal miso).
- Halal groceries: none could be confirmed in Yamanashi or Shizuoka — bring snacks from Tokyo.
The full map (paid): the Mt Fuji chapter has 24 places in Yamanashi and Shizuoka (including Mt Fuji Shizuoka Airport, Shizuoka Masjid and Dogashima in Izu), out of 231 places in 19 prefectures — each with its official source and check date. See it here.
