Short answer. From Osaka Namba to Kintetsu Nara: 38 minutes, no change, ¥680 adult / ¥340 child, and your 5-year-old rides free on Kintetsu. For four, return trains + Todai-ji's Great Buddha Hall + 2 bundles of deer crackers = ¥5,800 ≈ RM149. Don't buy the Kintetsu Rail Pass for a plain Namba–Nara return: it costs this family ¥1,350 (≈ RM35) more.

Kids under 6: on Kintetsu, children aged 1–5 ride free, up to 2 for each paying adult or child. Children 6–11 pay half (Kintetsu).

The pass costs more for a Namba–Nara return, and still costs more if you do Kyoto → Nara → Namba in one day (normal tickets ¥3,600 for this family). It includes Nara Kotsu buses around Nara Park, Nishinokyo and Horyu-ji, so it only starts to make sense if you ride those buses too. The source doesn't list a price for pre-school children at Todai-ji; ask at the counter. Optional: Kasuga Taisha main sanctuary ¥700 per adult (Kasuga Taisha).
4. The deer: three rules for kids
Nara's deer are wild animals. The Nara Deer Preservation Foundation says they can bite, kick, butt and charge, and older people and families with small children should take extra care.
- Only buy crackers when you're ready to hand them over. Hold them too long and the deer will chase you. Show, then give straight away.
- Let an adult hold the crackers; small kids stand behind.
- Only give deer crackers, no other food (not the kids' snacks either).

6. How to plan the day
- From Osaka (half or full day): morning Namba → Kintetsu Nara, walk to Nara Park and Todai-ji (open 8:00–17:00 in December), lunch in Nara, back to Namba before dark.
- On your Kyoto → Osaka hotel-change day: Kintetsu from Kyoto to Nara, leave bags in a locker at Kintetsu Nara Station (large lockers ¥600–1,000, 254 units; extra-large ¥800–1,500, Kintetsu, August 2026), see Nara, then go straight on to Namba. You save a return trip.
