Where Can You Eat Halal in Kyoto? 15 Places Around Kyoto Station, Gion/Kawaramachi and Arashiyama (Status of Each, 2026)

Short answer. Kyoto is easier than it looks: there is halal-certified kaiseki (Honke Tankuma Honten), halal wagyu sukiyaki (HALRA) and certified wagyu ramen in Gion, all within 15 minutes of Kawaramachi. The hard part is Arashiyama: the sources list only two restaurants, so book or plan lunch there. And two places on older lists have closed (Naritaya), so don't rely on 2024–2025 lists.

3. Closed: don't follow old lists
- Naritaya (two halal ramen branches in Gion/Higashiyama): closed as of August 2026 (HN). Older lists may still mention them.
- Indian Dhaba Noorani Gion: permanently closed (HN, checked 23 August 2026).
4. Kyoto food to be careful with, and what to eat instead
- Kaiseki and obanzai (Kyoto home cooking): Japanese cooking commonly uses mirin (sweet cooking rice wine) and sake in broths and marinades, and the menu won't say so. Instead: Honke Tankuma Honten (halal-certified kaiseki, HGJ).
- Sukiyaki and shabu-shabu: the meat and the warishita sauce usually contain mirin or sake. Instead: HALRA or KYOTO PANGA (Nakagyo), Yoshiya (Arashiyama).
- Ramen: most shops use pork or regular chicken broth. Instead: GYUMON, SHINJUKU-TEI, HALAL RAMEN JAPAN, Ayam-Ya.
- Matcha sweets and Nishiki Market snacks: read the label (gelatin, alcohol in fillings); the Japanese words are on the [label cheat sheet](/halal-labels-japan-convenience-store/). For a clear dessert: Premarché Gelateria.
5. Where to pray
- Kyoto Masjid (Kyoto Muslim Association): 92 Miyagaki-cho, Kamigyo-ku, near the Kyoto Imperial Palace (HGJ, Kyoto Travel). Tuesday–Saturday 12:00–18:00, closed Sunday. Friday prayers at 12:30, 13:00 and 13:30, men only (Kyoto Travel).
- Free prayer spaces (Kyoto Travel): Yumeyakata Gojo (353 Shiogamacho, Shimogyo-ku, 10:00–17:30, booking preferred, up to 5 people), Yumeyakata Oike Bettei (Nakagyo-ku, 10:00–19:00), Nijo Castle (ask the castle office; admission ticket needed), kokoka (Sakyo-ku, 9:00–21:00, closed Mondays).
- Arashiyama: the prayer room at Yoshiya (11:00–17:00, for diners, with ablution area) (Kyoto Travel).
6. A three-day order in Kyoto
- Day 1 (arrive at Kyoto Station): GYUMON Kyoto Station, drop bags, dinner in Kawaramachi: HALAL RAMEN JAPAN or HALRA.
- Day 2 (Kiyomizu → Gion): lunch at Kiyomizu SOU, pray at Yumeyakata Gojo, kaiseki dinner at Honke Tankuma (book ahead).
- Day 3 (Arashiyama): bamboo grove in the morning, lunch at Yoshiya (eat and pray in one place), back to the station before dark.
