Sources: the Halal Gourmet Japan directory (updated 15 August 2026) and the One Day Away guide (6 June 2026). Checked 15 September 2026. Halal status can change; I write the status exactly as the source shows it, and you confirm at the restaurant before eating.

Short answer. If you sleep in Namba ([Osaka hotels for families](/osaka-hotels-for-families-usj-real-prices/)), halal food is easier than in Tokyo: within walking distance of Dotonbori there is certified halal wagyu, chicken ramen, Turkish, Pakistani and Indonesian food. What you need to understand is three different statuses: halal certified (by a Japanese certification body), pork-free without certification (the kitchen may be shared), and Muslim-friendly (specific menu items only). The list below states each restaurant's status as shown in the source.

1. Three statuses: read this before the list

StatusMeaningSuitable for
Halal certifiedThe restaurant or its meat is certified by a Japanese body (e.g. Japan Halal Foundation, Japan Muslim Association). No pork, no alcohol in the cookingEveryone
Pork-freeNo pork on the menu, but no certificate; meat may be halal, oil and kitchen may be shared, alcohol may be soldThose who take the "no pork is enough" approach; ask about the meat and mirin
Muslim-friendlyOnly specific dishes are prepared for Muslims; otherwise a regular restaurantMixed families; ask which dishes

This is the same as the [three halal labels at konbini](/halal-labels-japan-convenience-store/): the word "halal" on the door does not always mean a certificate. Ask "Halal certified? Pork-free?"; restaurants in this area are used to the question.

2. The list: Namba · Dotonbori · Shinsaibashi

3. How to arrange your meals (without wasting time)

4. Four things Malaysians should know

  1. Status changes. Owners change, certificates expire, menus change. The sources above were updated June–August 2026; before you go, open Halal Gourmet Japan or Halal Navi for that day's status.
  2. "Pork-free" is not "halal". If you need a certificate, pick only the rows marked "Halal certified": Wabi Sabi, Panga, NAZAR, Ali's Kitchen, Osaka Halal Restaurant.
  3. Prayer rooms. Wabi Sabi has one (HGJ). Some large malls in Namba also have prayer spaces; ask at the information counter.
  4. Sleep near the food. Everything above is on foot or one station from Namba. A 4-person room here is RM258–304 a night in peak week ([list and prices](/osaka-hotels-for-families-usj-real-prices/)); filter "free cancellation" on Osaka hotels on Trip.com.

For the USJ day: 1-day tickets from RM400 per person on Klook; bring konbini food and have dinner back in Namba.

I update this list when the sources update a status or a restaurant closes.
