Halal Soy Sauce, Miso & Dashi Soy Sauce in Japan (2026): Certified Brands, Who Certified Them, Where to Buy
Checked 2026-11-06 · Updated 2026-11-06
Checked 6 Nov 2026 on the official sites of Kikkoman, Marukome, Kamada Shoyu, Hikari Miso, Yamasa, Takara Shuzo, Mizkan and JFLA Holdings (Morita). Only products that the maker itself calls halal-certified are listed. Certification bodies are named as each maker names them.
Short answer. Three Japanese seasonings are named as halal-certified on their makers' own pages: Kikkoman Halal Soy Sauce (1 L, certified by HFFIA), Marukome Halal Ryotei no Aji miso (750 g, Japan Halal Association) and Kamada Halal Dashi Soy Sauce (15 ml sachets, BPJPH of Indonesia). All three makers say their certifier is approved by, or has mutual recognition with, Malaysia's JAKIM. The catch is where to buy. Kikkoman says its halal soy sauce is not sold in ordinary shops or supermarkets; its page points to an online listing. Marukome's halal miso is on Marukome's online shop at ¥1,566 for two tubs. Kamada's is sold at Kamada's own shops, ¥432 a pouch. On the supermarket shelf, regular Kikkoman and Yamasa soy sauce list alcohol in their ingredients, and hon mirin is 12–14% alcohol. 1. The certified products, side by side
| Product | What it is | Size and price (official) | Certified by (maker's words) | JAKIM link (maker's words) | Where the maker says to buy |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kikkoman Halal Soy Sauce (gluten-free) | Soy sauce close to regular dark (koikuchi) soy sauce in colour and taste; no wheat | 1 L PET bottle; 18 months unopened. No price on the official page | HFFIA, a halal body in the Netherlands | "Mutual recognition" with bodies including JAKIM; follows Malaysia's MS 1500:2009 among other standards | Not sold in general shops or mass retailers. The page links to an online listing (1 L × 2) |
| Marukome Halal Ryotei no Aji | Organic miso: organic soybeans, organic rice, salt | 750 g tub. ¥1,566 for 2 tubs on Marukome's online shop | Japan Halal Association (NPO) | Hikari Miso describes the same body as approved by JAKIM | Marukome online shop; the product page also links to Amazon and Yodobashi |
| Kamada Halal Dashi Soy Sauce | Dashi soy sauce (soy sauce, sugar, salt, bonito powder and more), already sweetened | 15 ml × 5 sachets per pouch, ¥432 a pouch (tax incl.); 1 year shelf life | BPJPH, Indonesia's halal agency (certified 30 Oct 2024; on sale since 18 Aug 2025) | "Mutual recognition with bodies including Malaysia's JAKIM" | Kamada's main store and Takamatsu Ritsurin store, "and others" |
Sources: each maker's product page and press release (Sources 1–4, 8–10). Marukome's footnote says its certification scope follows the association's standards and excludes HAK (Turkey) and GAC (Gulf states).
Two more makers to watch. Hikari Miso says it was the first miso maker to get halal certification, in 2012, from the Japan Halal Association, and built a production line only for halal products. Its company pages don't say which retail packs carry the mark, so look for the logo on the pack. Morita's Shodoshima factory was certified by the Muslim Professional Japan Association on 1 Jul 2026. Its press release names no products and says production will be "limited" for now.
2. Why the regular bottle on the shelf is the problem
| What you see in the shop | What the official page says | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Kikkoman Koikuchi Soy Sauce | Ingredients: defatted soybeans, wheat, salt, soybeans, then alcohol and a preservative | Kikkoman |
| Kikkoman "Itsudemo Shinsen" fresh soy sauce | Ingredients end with alcohol | Kikkoman |
| Yamasa Shoyu (500 ml, 1 L, 1.8 L) | Ingredients end with alcohol | Yamasa |
| Soy sauce brewing in general | Normal brewing includes alcohol fermentation by yeast. Kikkoman's halal version is made by its own method that suppresses it | Kikkoman, 2 Aug 2017 |
| Hon mirin | Generally 12–14% alcohol; classed as an alcoholic drink under Japan's liquor tax law | Takara Shuzo |
| Mirin-style seasoning | Under 1% alcohol; classed as a food | Takara Shuzo |
| Dashi soy sauce and noodle soup bases | Often contain mirin, and most soy sauces have alcohol added (Kamada's own words) | Kamada |
None of the halal products in section 1 is a mirin. Mirin-style seasoning has less alcohol, but none of the makers above calls it halal-certified. Read the label; you decide.
3. What to do with this
- Cooking in an apartment with a kitchen. Don't plan on finding Kikkoman's halal soy sauce in a supermarket: Kikkoman says it isn't sold there. Marukome's halal miso and Kikkoman's halal soy sauce are sold online. If you order to your accommodation, ask first whether it accepts parcels.
- A sweet glaze without mirin. Kamada's halal dashi soy sauce already has sugar as its second ingredient. Kamada suggests it straight for sushi and sashimi, diluted 3 times for a sukiyaki sauce, and for teriyaki and rice bowls.
- Souvenirs. Kamada's 15 ml sachets are individually packed, which the maker says makes them easy to carry. They are sold at Kamada's own shops, so they fit a trip to Takamatsu. Marukome's 750 g tub is heavier.
- In a supermarket or konbini. No halal mark means read the ingredients. On Kikkoman and Yamasa soy sauce, alcohol is listed near the end, after the main ingredients. The free label sheet at the end of this page shows the word to look for.
